Hybrid
/ˈhaɪbrɪd/
Definition
Hybrid describes a plant produced by crossing two genetically distinct parents, usually different species, subspecies, varieties, or cultivated lines within the same genus. It is a biological concept and a breeding result, not a plant part. Such plants combine traits from both parents, and their offspring may vary or be sterile, unlike true-to-type plants grown from stable seed lines. In botany, a hybrid may also occur naturally where related plants interbreed.
Botanical Significance
- Genetic mixing: In plants, hybrid can combine traits from different parent lines, which may change flower color, fruit quality, growth habit, or stress tolerance compared with either parent.
- Fertility varies: Some hybrid plants produce viable seed, while others are partly or fully sterile. This matters in breeding and helps explain why seed from a garden plant may not resemble the parent.
- Identification and naming: A hybrid can complicate classification because it may show intermediate features between its parents. In botany and horticulture, naming often records this mixed origin to distinguish it from naturally occurring species.
- Use in cultivation: Plant breeders use hybrid crosses to combine useful characteristics in ornamentals, vegetables, and fruit crops. Many are selected for uniform performance, but those traits may not stay stable when grown from saved seed.
