Perennial
/pəˈrɛniəl/
Definition
Perennial describes a plant life cycle in which a plant lives for more than 2 years, surviving through multiple growing seasons. Unlike annuals, which complete their life cycle in 1 season, and biennials, which take 2, perennials persist and regrow from the same roots, crown, bulbs, rhizomes, or other overwintering structures. Many die back above ground during cold or dry periods, then resume growth when conditions improve.
Botanical Significance
- Life-cycle strategy: As a life-history trait, perennial shifts a plant’s investment toward survival structures such as crowns, rhizomes, bulbs, or woody stems, which let it resume growth after dormant periods.
- Seasonal growth pattern: Many species die back above ground in cold or dry seasons while roots or other protected parts remain alive. This pattern helps explain why a plant can reappear after seeming to disappear.
- Flowering and maturity: Some perennial species spend their first seasons building roots and shoots before they flower heavily. Compared with many annuals, they often allocate less energy to one-time seed production and more to repeated growth cycles.
- Garden planning value: In horticulture, perennial helps predict long-term placement, maintenance, and propagation. Gardeners often divide clumping plants or manage spread from rhizomes because established plants can persist and enlarge over time.
