lychee (Litchi chinensis) Light Needs

Lychee grows best in full sun, with long, bright exposure and several hours of direct sunlight daily.

Litchi chinensis Light Requirements

Lychee is native to humid subtropical areas of southern China, where warm seasons are bright and sun exposure is strong. In cultivation, the species is typically grown in open sites rather than shade, because high light supports dense growth, flowering, and fruit development. Young trees may receive some shelter while establishing, but mature plants need open, direct light. It prefers full sun.

  • Ideal exposure:

Lychee needs about 8–10 hours of bright outdoor light daily, with 6+ hours of direct sun when acclimated.

  • Full sun tolerance:

Established plants handle full sun well, especially where air movement and root space are adequate.

  • Partial sun limit:

Partial sun is tolerated, but it is less reliable for dense growth, flowering, and fruiting.

  • Harsh afternoon sun:

Young or recently moved plants benefit from gradual exposure before taking long, hot afternoon sun.

Strong sun is useful, but sudden or extreme exposure can injure foliage.

Bleached patches:

Sun-facing leaves may develop pale tan areas that look dry or papery after abrupt exposure.

Scorched new growth:

Tender flushes can crisp or discolor when moved quickly into hot afternoon sun.

One-sided damage:

Marks often appear most on the side facing the strongest sun, rather than evenly across the canopy.

Heat-stressed leaves:

Leaves may curl or look dull during intense midday heat, especially in containers.

Shift the plant to morning sun with filtered afternoon light, or add light shade during the hottest hours. Reintroduce stronger sun gradually over 1–2 weeks.

In weak light, growth often remains alive but becomes thin and less productive over time.

  • Long spacing:

New stems may stretch, with wider gaps between leaves than growth made in brighter conditions.

  • Leaning canopy:

The plant may angle toward the brightest side, especially when light comes from only one direction.

  • Small new leaves:

Fresh growth can emerge smaller or softer when there is not enough sun to fuel strong development.

  • Poor bloom set:

Flowering and fruiting are often reduced when active-season light stays too low.

Move Litchi chinensis toward a brighter, sunnier position, increasing direct sun in stages. Avoid keeping it in shade as a long-term setup.

If full sun is not available, choose the brightest outdoor spot with morning and midday sun rather than all-day shade. Treat partial sun as a compromise for young or container-grown plants, not the ideal long-term position.

Increase exposure over 7–14 days after moving the plant from shade. Rotate containers every few weeks so the canopy receives light more evenly.

Deep shade is unsuitable because it reduces sturdy growth and flowering potential.
