Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) Light Needs

Cyclamen grows best in bright, indirect or filtered light, with only gentle morning direct sun.

Cyclamen persicum Light Requirements

Cyclamen persicum is native to parts of the eastern Mediterranean, where it grows during the cooler, wetter part of the year. It is often found in rocky ground, scrub, and open woodland edges where light is bright but broken by surrounding vegetation.

This seasonal pattern explains its preference in cultivation. Strong midday sun can overheat leaves, while dim rooms reduce bloom quality. Preferred light is bright indirect or filtered light.

  • Ideal exposure:

Cyclamen persicum needs about 6–8 hours of bright, indirect or filtered light daily, including up to 1–2 hours of gentle direct morning sun.

  • Gentle sun:

Early morning or late winter sun is usually tolerated, but hot midday or afternoon sun can scorch leaves and fade flowers.

  • Lower light:

Light shade is tolerated for short periods, but flowering is usually weaker when the plant sits far from a bright window.

  • Seasonal balance:

During active cool-season growth, choose the brightest filtered spot available rather than a warm, sunny exposure.

Indoors, place this plant where light is bright but not hot.

NConditional
North-facing window:

A bright, unobstructed north-facing window can work, but flowering may be lighter if the room is dim.

EBest
East-facing window:

An east-facing window is the best indoor choice because it provides bright light and gentle morning sun.

SConditional
South-facing window:

A south-facing window is suitable only with a sheer curtain or a position several feet back from the glass.

WConditional
West-facing window:

A west-facing window needs filtering or distance because afternoon sun can be too strong and warm.

Aim for bright light without long periods of hot direct sun on the leaves or flowers.

Excess light usually shows after direct sun or a sudden move to a brighter spot.

Bleached patches:

Leaves may develop pale, tan, or silvery areas on the sun-facing side.

Crisp flower edges:

Petals can dry or fade faster when exposed to hot window glass or afternoon sun.

Flattened leaves:

Foliage may lie lower or look tired during bright periods, even when temperatures are otherwise acceptable.

Scorched marks:

Brown, dry spots can appear where leaves touched intense light, especially after Cyclamen persicum was moved abruptly.

Move the pot out of direct afternoon sun and use a sheer curtain if the window is very bright. Keep the plant in bright filtered light while damaged tissue ages out.

Weak light is most noticeable during active growth and flowering. It rarely improves by waiting in the same dim spot.

  • Reduced blooms:

Buds may form slowly, stay small, or open on shorter display when light is inadequate.

  • Leaning growth:

Leaves and flower stems may angle toward the nearest window instead of staying evenly upright.

  • Longer stems:

New growth can look stretched, with softer stems reaching for brighter conditions.

  • Smaller leaves:

Fresh leaves may be smaller or less patterned than older leaves produced in better light.

Move Cyclamen persicum closer to a bright window with filtered light, avoiding harsh afternoon sun. Rotate the pot weekly after the move for even exposure.

If ideal light is not available, choose bright filtered light over direct afternoon sun because flower and leaf quality are usually better there.

Move the pot a few feet back from harsh glass, or add a sheer curtain when sun patches hit the foliage.

Avoid a deep room corner because it is usually too dim to support steady blooming.
