Planting Grass Seed in Summer – What Works and What Fails
Summer seeding succeeds when the grass type suits the season, and the soil stays moist. Find out how to prepare the seedbed and choose a safe window for planting.
Zantedeschia aethiopica grows best in moisture-retentive, airy soil with a slightly acidic to near-neutral pH that supports steady root health.

Soil Texture
Loamy, Silty, Organic-rich

Soil pH
Acidic (5.5–6.5), Slightly acidic (6.5–7.0)

Soil Drainage
Waterlogged tolerant

Native to southern Africa, Zantedeschia aethiopica grows in wet ground, along stream edges, and in marshy areas. That background explains why it prefers soil that stays evenly moist and contains plenty of organic matter rather than a fast-drying, gritty substrate.
Its thick underground rhizomes store energy and spread best in loose, loamy or silty soil with some air space around them. The best soil for Calla lily holds moisture well but still feels open, so roots can grow steadily without becoming packed into dense, hard ground.
A custom mix helps Zantedeschia aethiopica stay evenly rooted in a medium that holds moisture without becoming heavy.
The finished blend should feel soft, slightly springy, and rich, with excess water moving through at a moderate pace rather than pooling.
A good target is 5.5–7.0 pH, with slightly acidic soil generally preferred. That range helps key nutrients stay available without pushing the root zone too far toward acidity or alkalinity.
Calla lily is fairly comfortable across that mild acidic to near-neutral span, but extreme pH can limit uptake of nutrients even when the soil itself seems otherwise suitable.
This species handles moisture better than many houseplants, but stagnant, airless media can still create trouble around the roots.
Dense soil that stays flat and heavy can restrict oxygen around roots, so gently loosen the surface and plan to switch to a fresher, more open mix.
A swampy or musty odor suggests the root zone may be staying stale too long, so check the container setup and improve air flow through the medium.
A hard top layer can block even moisture movement, so break it up carefully and replace the top portion if it no longer absorbs water well.
If Calla lily is in soil that shrinks, dries unevenly, or no longer buffers moisture well, refresh the mix so the roots have more consistent conditions.

Yes. Even though this species tolerates more moisture than many indoor plants, drainage holes help prevent stale, oxygen-poor conditions and make it easier to manage a consistently suitable Calla lily soil mix.
Botan can help assess whether a visible issue may be linked to the root zone by checking photo-based clues alongside your care conditions.
