- How Botan App Helps You Identify Any Plant
Still, specific ID patterns exist, both locally and nationwide. We tracked species identifications in the Botan App from January to October 2026 to discover and analyze the key trends.
This study shows the most identified plants in the U.S. Here, you can find the top 10 species in every state, see which houseplants, wild species, or edibles dominate the rankings, and evaluate differences across the Northeast, Midwest, South, and West.
Key Findings
The Botan plant identification data collected across 50 states show that:
- Golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) made the top 10 in all 50 states and ranked #1 in 30. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) made the top 10 in 48 states, all except for Alaska and Hawaii, and ranked #1 in 17.
- The two leaders in plant identifications, golden pothos and peace lily, split the country. Golden pothos leads in 11 of 13 Western states and 7 of 9 Northeastern states. Peace lily is #1 in 10 of 16 Southern states and in none in the West.
- At least one species from the Dracaena genus — corn plant (Dracaena fragrans), snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata), song of India (Dracaena reflexa), or lucky bamboo (Dracaena braunii) — made the top 10 in 49 out of 50 states. Vermont is the only exception.
- Wild and backyard plants — white mulberry (Morus alba), American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana), poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans), Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), Canadian horseweed (Erigeron canadensis) — made the top 10 in 17 states in the Northeast, Midwest, and South. None of these species made the top 10 in the West.
- Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is the most identified of the five vegetables that made the top 10 in at least one state. It’s listed in 27 states’ rankings, including 11 of 16 Southern and 8 of 12 Midwestern states, but in none of the 5 Pacific states.

“I believe we can see a clear pattern of Western states preferring different houseplants from those in other regions. Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa) ranks #2-4 in 9 of them. It never makes the top 4 elsewhere. Peace lily is not #1 in the West, while corn plant holds #2 in 8 Western states.” — Anastasiia Vasylchyshyna, botanist.

The #1 Most Identified Plant in Every State

The country “splits” into two zones, each with its own most popular species. Botan App insights, based on what users scan most, show that the golden pothos leads the West and the Northeast, while the peace lily leads the South. The Midwest is evenly split between the two (6 states each).
The least “mainstream” states are Hawaii, Maine, and Montana. In each case, the unique species choice can be explained by local climate and growing conditions.

“Interestingly, there is no state where edibles or wild plants made it to #1. I assume that’s because people scan houseplants year-round. Meanwhile, edibles are partly self-evident, while safety checks for wild plants are just rarer among urban dwellers who make up the majority of the U.S. population.” — Dariia Plaksina, botanist.

Houseplants, Edibles and Backyard Plants
The most frequently scanned species fall into three groups:
- Houseplants — dominate in every state. Golden pothos appears in every state’s top 10, followed by peace lily in 48. Snake plant, corn plant, Swiss cheese plant, spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum), and dumb cane (Dieffenbachia seguine) appear in 23 to 45 states.
- Edibles — interest is seasonal. Some edibles also make the top 10, but they clearly follow the garden season. The number of states where they appear depends on the species. For tomato, it’s 27; for pepper (Capsicum annuum), 15; for summer squash (Cucurbita pepo), 5; and for cucumber (Cucumis sativus), just 2.
- Wild & backyard species — the least identified group. Unlike edibles, people usually encounter wild and backyard plants rather than choose them, and they often scan them to check for toxicity. The exact species are listed above (see the Key Findings section).
State Highlights: 12 States That Break the Pattern

Some states showed unique patterns in plant identifications. Each, however, has a plausible explanation.
“I assume all the unusual patterns come down to a few key reasons. In some cases, the species fits the local climate well enough, and users scan it more frequently for detailed plant care guides. In others, the plant is either very common or looks like one of the dangerous species, so users scan it to ensure it’s actually safe.” — Alex Yar, plant expert.
Hawaii
Ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa) ranks as the most frequently identified plant in Hawaii, and this is the only state where a tropical plant takes the #1 spot. Four more tropical and subtropical species — bitter orange (Citrus × aurantium), gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides), red ginger (Alpinia purpurata), lucky bamboo — also appear in no other state’s top 10. That is due to the state’s unique climate. Only Hawaii has large areas in the warmest, frost-free USDA climate zones 12 and 13.
Note that the Ti plant is toxic to dogs and cats, so it should be kept out of pets' reach.
Maine
In Maine, Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) ranks #1. This plant needs long, cool nights and typically blooms in autumn and winter, making it a perfect fit for the local climate. Red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) ranks #4 and appears on no other state’s top 10 list. It’s a native, cold-hardy species that is widespread in Maine’s forests.
Note that Thanksgiving cactus is a subtropical species that needs well-drained soil. Overwatering is the main risk for it.
Montana
Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum) takes the top spot only in Montana. Mexican snowball (Echeveria elegans) also appears in no other state’s ranking. Both plants’ popularity may be explained by their tolerance for local dry air: the Chinese evergreen tolerates low light and low humidity, and so does the Mexican snowball native to semi-deserts.
Chinese evergreen is toxic to pets because of calcium oxalate crystals. Meanwhile, the Mexican snowball is non-toxic for cats, dogs, and horses.
Vermont
Vermont has two unique species: Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) that ranks #2 and annual fleabane (Erigeron annuus) that ranks #5. Garden Phlox is a common hardy perennial that thrives in USDA zones 4-8, making it a great fit for Vermont’s 4a-6a. Annual Fleabane is native to the Eastern U.S. and quickly colonizes open ground, so locals see it very frequently.
Though garden phlox is hardy and low-maintenance, it’s vulnerable to powdery mildew, so choose resistant cultivars and don’t plant it too close together.
Rhode Island
In Rhode Island, summer squash ranks #2, higher than in any other state. Cucumber ranks #8, and it’s in the top 10 in only one other state: Louisiana. Both are warm-season garden vegetables, and both fit the climate. Urban gardening and community gardens are really popular in Rhode Island. The state has about 150 days between the last frost and first frost, and both vegetables fit the timeline just right.
Summer squash and cucumber are close relatives, and both are vulnerable to cucumber beetles, so protect them with floating row cover right after planting.
Alaska
Unlike most other states, Alaska doesn’t have peace lily in its top 10. Hawaii is the only other exception. It’s also the only state to have fireweed on the list.
Peace lilies thrive in warm, humid environments, which just doesn’t match Alaska’s recommended indoor humidity of just 30-40%. By contrast, fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) is common in the state and grows along local roads.
Fireweed is edible — its young shoots and leaves can be eaten in spring. The plant needs a lot of sun and dies in shade.
West Virginia
Poison Ivy ranks #3, and this is its highest position in any state (it’s also in the top 10 in Ohio and Massachusetts). It’s very common in West Virginia, where humid summers and wooded landscapes support its growth. It can grow as a vine, ground cover, or shrub, which makes it hard to identify.
Poison ivy can cause a rash, blisters, or severe itching. Don’t touch it or even burn brush piles — use a plant identifier online if you encounter anything that resembles it.
Oregon
Oregon is the only state where common yarrow (Achillea millefolium) made it to the top 10, ranking #4. It’s a native plant that grows wild and is widely cultivated for its aesthetic appeal. It is also a major local pollinator attractor.
Common yarrow is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, colic, and drooling.
Massachusetts
Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) ranks #8 and has not made the top 10 in any other state. Poison Ivy ranks #9, lower than in West Virginia, but it’s still worth attention. Both plants are common vines in the area and are considered harmful. Poison Ivy causes severe allergies, while oriental bittersweet is one of the most invasive species. It’s illegal to sell or import in Massachusetts.
Oriental bittersweet should never be composted — put it into a trash bin instead to prevent its spread.
Minnesota
Tomatoes, ranked #2, are among Minnesota's most popular vegetables, but they’re also hard to grow there, so users may be looking for extra care recommendations. Minnesota is also the only state with siebold's hosta (Hosta sieboldiana), ranked #6. Its popularity may come from its exceptional cold hardiness, which is crucial in northern climates.
Plant tomatoes in warm soil, water evenly, and avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilizer to prevent blossom-end rot, one of Minnesota's most common tomato problems.
South Dakota
Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) appears in the top 10 only in South Dakota, ranking #5 on the list. It’s sown 2-4 weeks before the last frost, tolerates light frosts, and blooms in 60-80 days after sowing. That fits South Dakota’s short season and USDA climate zones 3-5.
Cornflower doesn’t transplant well, so sow it directly in the soil. Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering and prevent excessive self-seeding.
Mississippi
Mississippi has three wild species in the top 10: Virginia creeper (#4), Canadian horseweed (#9), hairy crabweed (Fatoua villosa) (#10). Hairy сrabweed is unique within all the states’ rankings. All these species are common in the state, likely due to its humid subtropical climate.
When you encounter any wild plant, identify it first to confirm what you are dealing with. For instance, Virginia Creeper looks similar to Poison Ivy. Either way, wear gloves if you want to remove any of these from your garden.

Care Tips for America's Top 5 Most Identified Plants
All five top plants tolerate indoor conditions well, but each has slightly different needs.
- Golden pothos. Place it in bright, indirect light. Use standard potting soil mix and water every 1-2 weeks, only when the soil is dry.
- Peace lily. It also needs bright indirect light. But unlike pothos, it won’t tolerate darker spots. Use well-drained soil and watch for signs — its leaves droop when thirsty.
- Snake plant. It’s low-light tolerant and needs watering only when the soil is completely dry (roughly 2-6 weeks). Use fast-draining soil made for cacti or succulents.
- Corn plant. Place it near an east- or north-facing window for indirect light. Water every 1-2 weeks using filtered, distilled, or rainwater.
- Swiss cheese plant. Avoid harsh direct sun and use an airy, well-draining soil mix. Maintain moderate to high humidity, similar to its natural tropical environment.
You can also scan any of these plants for more detailed and personalized recommendations. Botan’s houseplant identification lets you identify the species almost instantly, get an instant care guide, calculate watering, use the Light Meter, and customize reminders for easy care.

About This Data
The methodology behind this study is as follows:
- The dataset is based on user identifications in the Botan App (iOS, Android, web)
- The period covered is January 1 to October 21, 2026.
- The data covers 50 states, with each identification assigned to a state by device geolocation at the time of the scan. The District of Columbia is excluded.
- For each state, identifications were counted per species, and the top 15 were extracted.
- Entries naming the same species by its common and botanical name were merged by summing their counts.
- The top 10 plants per state were ranked. When species had equal counts, the one with more identifications across all 50 states ranked higher.
Limitations: The data show which plants were scanned most frequently. The statistics don’t confirm which species are most widespread or most commonly owned in a specific state. In smaller states, the positions are less stable than in larger ones.

How Botan App Helps You Identify Any Plant
Botan App is a tool that lets you automatically identify a species and get a full plant profile without manually scrolling through a list of all plants or searching for care or toxicity information.
The process is simple: take or upload 1 photo of a plant, wait 1-5 seconds for the result, learn its name, and tap to create an instant care plan. You can use the app to find pet-safe plants, care for houseplants with confidence, identify the most likely plant disease, or set effective reminders for watering, repotting, pruning, and more. The app is designed to be versatile.
FAQ
Golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is the most identified species. It made the top 10 in all 50 states and ranked #1 in 30 states. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) is the second most identified plant, ranking in the top 10 in 48 states and #1 in 17.

Anastasiia Vasylchyshyna studied biology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, at the Educational and Scientific Center "Institute of Biology and Medicine." That academic grounding shaped how she approaches every article: start with the science, end with something a plant owner can actually act on.
Over the years, she's written dozens of articles on plant care and plant pathology — covering everything from seasonal plant picks, garden prep, propagation and pruning guides, and the everyday mistakes that harm houseplants. Her goal isn't just to answer a question, but to help readers understand why a plant behaves the way it does, so they can spot problems on their own next time.
