Definition of Fast-Growing Plants & What’s Behind It

Fast-growing isn’t exactly a botanical classification. It’s a practical term that refers to a group of plants that grow much faster than other species of the same type. 

For example, an Empress tree can grow 15+ feet per year, while a pothos houseplant can grow 12-18 inches a month. Both are considered fast-growing plants — just in different categories and different environments. 

Rapid growth is not accidental — it’s determined by a combination of factors. These include the genetic ability to effectively convert sunlight, water, and CO2 into biomass, and better access to light, water, and nutrients. Simply put, such plants are “programmed” to absorb energy and transform it into huge roots and/or stems depending on the species. 

Use Cases & Care Tips for Fast-Growers 

These plants offer a lot of benefits. Trees and shrubs like Glossy privet or Leyland cypress can become a privacy screen you won't have to wait years for. Ground covers like sweet potato vine or creeping Jenny can cover gaps or bare areas rapidly. 

Indoor fast-growers, such as Heartleaf philodendron or Swiss cheese vine, offer a very visible and satisfying growing process and quickly become a striking addition to any interior. 

However, everything comes at a cost. These plants may require frequent pruning, repotting, watering, and feeding. Also, some are prone to diseases, have invasive roots, and may have a shorter lifespan.
